As a clarification; the top three (existing urban areas, edge of Cambridge outside the Green Belt and public transport corridors - assuming that they are outside the Green Belt) are the strong preferences. The bottom three are less preferable As a comment; all sites should be considered on their individual merits and assessed against the overarching aspirations such as available transport infrastructure and jobs / employment

We think sensitive densification is fundamental to growth. This puts a particular emphasis on the following: 1. Promoting high quality design to create contextual and contemporary developments that enhance the historic context / character of the city. 2. Opportunities for inventive retrofits and the opportunities to re-imagine existing streets and spaces to create new opportunities that respond to changing needs (i.e. movement patterns).

In our experience the following measure are effective when promoting design quality: 1. Architectural competitions (for projects on CCC land) 2. Continued production of design-led area-based guidance (potentially as SPD) for key sites, particularly where a cohesive approach to movement and public realm is required

It would be positive to provide opportunities to respond to an emerging draft of the plan - including illustrative area-based material and evolving strategies, in advance of the publication of a draft.

We hope that the Local Plan will give Cambridge a clear, local-authority led vision, driven as as much by elected council members as by professional civil servants. We support the early involvement of community and stakeholders and hope that this will lend support to the document.
