Yes. This could be at both individual site level and on a more strategic basis - i.e. creation of major new woodlands. Potentially, biodiversity net gain can be achieved for smaller developments through financial contributions to such objectives.

There are numerous matters relevant here which are all reflected in the adopted Local Plan: • Proximity of housing to nearby employment; • Inclusion of affordable housing; • Include low cost starter homes in new larger developments; • Proximity of housing to non-car means of transport; • Large residential developments to be situated within close proximity to existing and planned public transport corridors; • New tree planting or biodiversity enhancements; • Quality of place-making; • Car-sharing and communal transport arrangements; • Enhanced public transport generally; • Technology to allow home and flexible working; and • Large developments to include new allotments, community woodlands/ orchards etc.

The Local Plan should focus on the provision of new dwellings near existing employment opportunities which can be easily reached by public transport or on foot/bicycle. In the case of the sites promoted at Histon, the proximity of development in close proximity to the Guided Busway would promote sustainable transport means (both by bus, on foot and bicycle) and would reduce reliance on non-car modes. The Council should also focus on reducing traffic levels at problem areas and promotion of alternatives to the private car.

The villages and wider areas in close proximity to Cambridge continue to be attractive to certain employment sectors and that will continue so there will be pressure for such further development. It is therefore better to properly plan for this with an appropriate level of new housing based around existing settlements, in close proximity to existing employment sites and with appropriate non-car means of transport.

No specific comment, but tourism needs to be considered widely so that such consideration embraces the general leisure and recreation needs of the growing population are met. Experience has shown that the authorities have sometimes not supported the principle of cafés, garden centres, and similar ‘passive’ leisure destinations in rural areas.
