It is crucial that Greater Cambridge plans for making neighbourhoods conducive to encouraging healthy lifestyles, with good provision for sport and physical activity, including footpaths and cycleways. The emerging Greater Cambridge PPS and Sports Facilities Strategy must identify where new facilities are needed and which existing facilities should be protected. The significant new housing developments must provide on-site facilities such as playing fields, games courts, and opportunities for informal activity, in line with Sport England's Active Design guidance.

Cambourne must continue to develop its infrastructure for sport and physical activity. Demand is growing for a swimming pool that could serve Cambourne and Bourn Airfield, provided sufficient funds can be secured to enable its delivery.

It is critical that the emerging Local Plan contains policies that seek to protect existing sports facilities that are important to meeting the needs of local residents, and also policies that encourage the development of new facilities that encourage people to take part in sport and physical activity such as walking, cycling etc. Sport England have developed 'Active Design' which gives guidance on making new areas suitable for sport and physical activity. We would like to see 'Active Design' referenced in this policy.
