BG/GI: Green infrastructure

Representation ID: 57008

Received: 09/12/2021

Respondent: Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust

Representation Summary:

The Wildlife Trust strongly supports this policy along the lines proposed. We welcome the inclusion of the 14 strategic GI priority areas and themes. The provision of significant strategic natural greenspace is essential if Cambridge is to grow sustainably (we have no downland, moorland or coast) and this will need to be significantly funded through new development. The suggestion within the HRA of the use of a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace standard at 8 Ha / 1000 population is a good start. Current open space standards referred to within BG/PO and BG/EO are woefully inadequate without corresponding strategic GI provision.

BG/EO: Providing and enhancing open spaces

Representation ID: 57011

Received: 09/12/2021

Respondent: Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust

Representation Summary:

The Wildlife Trust supports this policy along the lines proposed, in as far as it goes, but see also our comments on policy BG/GI related to provision of sustainable levels of strategic natural greenspace which are not covered by existing open space policies or standards, which by themselves are woefully inadequate to the needs of the local population, without large-scale open access downland, moorland, coast or commons.

CC/WE: Water efficiency in new developments

Representation ID: 57018

Received: 09/12/2021

Respondent: Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust

Representation Summary:

The Wildlife Trust strongly supports the inclusion of this policy and the proposed policy direction.

We made similar representations to previous local plans which were ignored and the state of our chalk rivers and wetlands has continued to decline, dramatically in some instances, so this new approach is needed and welcome.

However, we are concerned that no mechanism has been identified to stop or delay building new homes and employment buildings if the proposed short-medium measures to provide new more sustainable water supplies are not delivered in time. This will be the true test of a sustainable Local Plan.
