Draft North East Cambridge Area Action Plan

Representation ID: 54506

Received: 05/10/2020

Respondent: Cambridge Cycling Campaign

Representation Summary:

The Science Park local centre should be located further away from King’s Hedges Road and the main western access road into the site to improve safety for people walking and cycling and avoid attracting drive-past visitors. The existing junction at Cambridge Regional College needs a significant redesign to accommodate higher flows of walking and cycling traffic in the area.

There is a noticeable lack of facilities within the west of the site which will remain a business-led Science Park with no housing or even a concert venue (which could double as a conference venue). This will mean it will remain quiet at night and may feel unsafe for people walking and cycling.

We think the cycle logistics hub may be better located at the current location of the car showrooms on Milton Road, or for two hubs to be allocated to the site (as discussed in policy 20), with one nearer the station in the eastern section to help encourage a shift of long-distance logistics from road to rail.

Neutral:
The broad rationale for the distribution of centres is understood. The Cowley Road Neighbourhood Centre (Policy 10e) is indicated to be partly on land owned by St John’s College. Whilst there are longer term plans for the redevelopment of parts of St John’s Innovation Park, further clarification and discussion is required as to how it is anticipated that the “small amount of ancillary retail space would extend the local centre over Cowley Road” into St John’s Innovation Park would be accommodated in advance of any redevelopment.
