A new road bridge over the railway somewhere just north of Cambridge North Station connecting Fen Road to Milton Avenue will:
Give cars safer access across the railway
Minimise delays
Provide for a cycle/footbridge at the existing level crossing site
Reduce timetable risk to Rail operations
Possibly increasing the number train paths available
Allow more opportunities for a metro style; and
Providing scope for a direct connection of the proposed Chisholm Trail to the station and CNF area.
The proposed bridge might be more economical if a single lane at the level crossing could be retained for use by HGV or exceptional loads.
As you can see the potential benefits span a wide range of organisations/people
Although I am not fully aware of what is currently proposed within the Cambridge Northern Fringe Development, I suggest consideration is given to including provision of a new road bridge over the railway somewhere just north of Cambridge North Station to connect Fen Road to Milton Avenue. The objectives will include:
Give cars safer access across the railway
Minimise delays
Provide space for a cycle / footbridge at the existing level crossing site
Reducing time table risk to Network Rail operations
Possibly increasing the number train paths available
Possibly providing more opportunities for a metro style use f the railway if that is a constraint on schemes being examined under the Mayors proposals; and
Possibly providing more scope for a direct connection of the proposed Chisholm Trail to the station and CNF area.
The proposed bridge might be more economical if a single lane at the level crossing could be retained for use by HGV or exceptional loads.
As you can see the potential benefits span a wide range of organisations with no single beneficiary and there is it is therefore important that whoever is responsible for the spatial planning for CNF does not rule out such a scheme by default. I urge you to therefore consider the proposal and how it might be released if it is found to have merit rather than have it falling through the 'cracks' between all the organisations concerned.
