My family and I have been resident in 5 Fitzroy Lane, overlooking Fitzroy St, for the past seventeen years. Our residence is one of the nine flats (1-9 Fitzroy Lane) situated on top of the building next to the building of historic interest currently occupied by 'Wilko', and overlooking Fitzroy St. In the artist impression of Fitzroy St, we are deeply shocked to see that our home has been replaced by a different building, presumably indicating an intention to demolish our home and replace it with something else, perhaps for the aesthetically simplistic and superficial purpose of creating a harmonious skyline. We have been given no indication of any plans to this effect, however, and also have not received any consultation (a matter about which I have objected separately). The building that we occupy is not one of the several eyesores on the street - in fact it is architecturally quite pleasing and very well-maintained, and the overlooking balconies create a valuable connection and balance between the residential and commercial aspects of the area. The flats 1-9 Fitzroy Lane are actually relatively affordable (for Cambridge city centre), and five of them have been occupied in the long-term by families with children. (The same holds for flats 10-14 Fitzroy Lane). The illustration suggests that someone thinks that it would be a good idea to replace the present building , which is in good condition, has shops on the ground floor, and residential dwellings above, with another building with shops on the ground floor and residential dwellings above. Not only is this idea an objectionable waste of money, it is deeply distressing to the families who have made their homes in the properties. I understand and generally support the plan to regenerate the area, and there is certainly a good case for rethinking the Grafton West Car Park area. But there is absolutely no demonstrable 'public interest' in knocking down perfectly nice family homes and replacing them with presumably more expensive flats or student accommodation. I shall be making separate formal representation along these lines to my councillor, and am also seeking legal advice.
