Electrification of vehicles has a major part to play. Pollution hotspots should be widely advertised as a public education exercise, including criitical times as well as places. Schools should be a focal point of publication, and campaigns to advertise progress.

Remember that 'electric vehicles' is an unsatisfactory generalisation. Current-technology and fashionable battery-electric vehicles are almost all far too heavy, substantially increasing particulate emission from tyre and road wear. This is particularly true of large, long range, battery-electric buses: start now on identifying ways to encourage, enable, and enforce the use of smaller and lighter vehicles, for instance by establishing a local source of carbon-neutral hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles.

The Local Plan should focus on the provision of new dwellings near existing employment opportunities which can be easily reached by public transport or on foot/bicycle. It should also focus on reducing traffic levels at problem areas and promotion of alternatives to the private car.

My input in this matter would be building more recycled plastic street furniture and planting more trees all shapes and sizes not a monotone of the same trees scattered around the city. More tree diversity is a key issue. Also creating recycled plastic street furniture eg picnic benches/ chairs would be giving back towards a healthier outlook towards the city’s values.

More trees, more public foot paths that are smooth so all wheels can roll on for healthy transport, congestion charges for cars in certain areas. Lowering bus rates across town to get more people taking green buses. MORE TREES

In order to improve air quality, it will be necessary to encourage development in sustainable location close to existing public transport, services and job opportunities to reduce the need for people to travel by private car as part of their everyday routine. Significant investment in infrastructure would be required to help deliver viable alternative modes of transport between areas of population and employment. Development on the edge of existing settlements for housing and employment will help increase the sustainability of existing towns and villages by reducing the need to commute for work or move away from family and friends to find affordable housing. The development of the land at Comberton Road, Toft enjoys good pedestrian linkages to the services and facilities in both Comberton and Toft reducing the need to use the private car.

The Local Plan should focus on the provision of new dwellings near existing employment opportunities which can be easily reached by public transport or on foot/bicycle. In the case of the sites promoted at Histon, the proximity of development in close proximity to the Guided Busway would promote sustainable transport means (both by bus, on foot and bicycle) and would reduce reliance on non-car modes. The Council should also focus on reducing traffic levels at problem areas and promotion of alternatives to the private car.

Air quality impact assessments of new developments. Prioritising placing of new developments where there is or can be good access to public transport. Minimum tree cover in all new developments over a certain size. Scaling up for tree and similar vegetation planting alongside roads Design of new builds to ensure appropriate ventilation etc. to ensure good indoor air quality, and provision of advice to the public on air quality and how they can improve air quality within and beyond their their own homes (use of burners, products with VOC etc.) and through their purchasing choices related to their personal vehicles (I think a lot of people don’t know about these things). This could be provided alongside advice on reducing energy consumption already available through come organisations...on a community level this could be scaled up.... Significant upscaling in infrastructure for electric cars, including on new developments. Possibility of free or low cost charging points?

charge cars for driving in city centres, stop new developments from having car parking (car parking only encourages car driving). Reallocate road space from cars to bikes and buses, especially at junctions, where currently people of bikes suffer from poor provision. We have had decades of traffic planners trying to increase motor traffic throughput, infact should be trying to increase cycle and pedestrian traffic throughput as the main objective, and should limit motor traffic throughput.

5.25 This can principally be achieved through the reduced use of polluting vehicles by: ● Locating development where there is good access to active travel, coupled with access to affordable, frequent, reliable and high-quality public transport options. ● Better cycle and pedestrian connectivity – achieved by developments directly and through a coordinated s106 infrastructure programme.

We need to encourage more cycling and walking and less car travel. Particularly in or close to central Cambridge. A charge for petrol and diesel cars entering the city. No charge for electric vehicles. Electric car charging infrastructure, although this mustn't be at the expense of walking and cycling accessibility
