Draft Greater Cambridge Local Plan for consultation

Biodiversity and green spaces

Representation ID: 204698

Received: 30/01/2026

Respondent: Girton Neighbourhood PLan Team

Representation Summary:

The respondent is part of Girton’s Neighbourhood Plan team who are drafting their Neighbourhood Plan, having consulted with planning officers from South Cambs Council.

New Local Plan's measures to protect and enhance biodiversity commended but believes an opportunity has been missed regarding local designations.

The draft Neighbourhood Plan includes policies to protect designated 'Green corridors' (hedge lines) and 'Blue corridors' (two tributaries of the river great Ouse: Beck Brook and Washpit Brook).

'Policy BG/RC: River corridors' welcomed but respondent requests addition of specific designations for 'Blue Corridor' and 'Green Corridor' that can be proposed by local communities as part of a Neighbourhood Plan in the same way that sites can be put forward for LGS or ICF designations.

I am commenting as a member of Girton’s Neighbourhood Plan team. We are in the process of drafting our Neighbourhood Plan and have already consulted with planning officers from South Cambs Council on our first draft and are reviewing our Plan in the light of the new draft Local Plan.
We have commented separately on the Draft Polices Map for Greater Cambs as it applies to Girton’s Neighbourhood Plan area
We commend the reinforcement of measures to protect and enhance biodiversity outlined in the new LP but we also believe an opportunity has been missed. Our draft Plan outlies policy to protect designated ‘Green corridors (hedge lines) and ‘Blue corridors (two streams) that run through the Neighbourhood Plan area. The streams in questions are Beck Brook and Washpit Brook which are both tributaries of the River Great Ouse.
While we note and welcome the specific ‘Policy BG/RC: River corridors ‘ we would like to see the addition of specific designations of ‘Blue Corridor and ‘Green Corridor which can be proposed by a local community as part of a Neighbourhood Plan are in the same way that sites can be put forward for Local Green Spaces (LGS) or Important Countryside Frontage’ (ICF designations.
