Draft Greater Cambridge Local Plan for consultation
Policy S/NST: Northstowe New Town
Representation ID: 202945
Received: 29/01/2026
Respondent: Northstowe and Longstanton Heritage Steering Group
The Group supports the approach to heritage in Policies S/NS and S/NST, acknowledging the importance of heritage assets.
Concerns were raised regarding Longstanton Paddocks, where visible remains of the mediaeval village exist, which is subject to a management plan.
Paragraph 11 of Policy S/NST restricts land uses between Northstowe and Longstanton to open land, which is deemed inappropriate for Longstanton Paddocks due to potential harm to heritage significance.
A recommendation was made to specifically mention Longstanton Paddocks in paragraph 54 of the Policy to ensure its significance as a key landscape feature is maintained and enhanced.
The Group is supportive of the approach taken to heritage within Policies S/NS and S/NST and the recognition of heritage assets and their importance. However there is an issue over the site known as Longstanton Paddocks, where remains of the mediaeval village of Longstanton can be seen as visible earthworks. This site is subject to a management plan, also part of a planning requirement.
Paragraph 11 of Policy S/NST covers separation between Northstowe and Longstanton, stating these areas must only contain open land uses such as playing fields, allotments and cemeteries. These uses are inappropriate for the Paddocks as they would cause substantial harm to the significance of these assets. We would recommend including the site as a specific mention in paragraph 54 of the Policy as a key landscape feature to be maintained and enhanced. This would allow clarity as to the significance and future appreciation of this heritage asset.
